Leo Fender — Father of the Solid body Electric Guitar

1909-1991

Clarence Leo Fender was born in 1909 in Anaheim, in Orange County on the outskirts of Los Angeles, and spent most of his life in the neighboring city of Fullerton.

A naturally curious boy, Leo developed a particular interest in electricity and mechanics under the influence of an uncle who lived nearby. Building his own crystal radios became one of his favorite pastimes. By the late 1920s, vacuum tubes had finally reached a level of performance that made them practical, and Leo’s radio projects progressed from simple crystal sets to more sophisticated designs incorporating proper detectors and amplifier circuits.

Leo later studied accounting in college and, after graduation, took a government job. He left Fullerton for a time after marrying but returned in 1938 and opened a radio repair shop, putting to use the knowledge he had accumulated since childhood.

The business prospered. In addition to repairing radios and other electrical equipment, Leo began custom-building musical instrument amplifiers in response to requests from local musicians. As his activities expanded, he became acquainted with Doc Kauffman, who had first come into the shop as a customer. The two discovered that they shared many interests and much technical knowledge in both electronics and musical instruments. Realizing that each had much to gain from working with the other, they eventually became partners and established  K&F in 1945.

K&F produced lap steel guitars equipped with original pickups, along with amplifiers designed for them. Business went well, but before long a difference in outlook emerged between Leo, who wanted to take the enterprise to the next level, and the more conservative Doc. Three years later, their partnership came to an end.

Leo was now on his own as a musical instrument manufacturer. His company was called Fender Electric Instruments.

Intent on expanding the business, Leo moved into a new factory to increase production capacity. On the sales side, he entered into an agreement with Radio-Tel, a company that had already been doing business with him. The key figure in this relationship was Don Randall, who would later become president of Fender Sales and play a major role in transforming Fender into an internationally recognized brand.

Expansion, however, inevitably brings higher costs, and unless increased capacity is fully utilized, those costs can quickly become a burden. Despite Don Randall’s efforts, sales of lap steels and amplifiers failed to grow as hoped.

For Leo, this was perhaps the most difficult period in getting the company established. The balance between income and expenses deteriorated badly, and the company’s survival was threatened on more than one occasion.

As the pressure mounted, Leo became convinced that there was only one way out: to develop a powerful and truly original product.

As he considered the possibilities, an idea began to take shape. Why not apply the construction principles and electrical amplification system of the lap steel guitars he was already making to a Spanish-style guitar—a guitar held and played conventionally rather than laid flat?

The basic idea itself was not entirely new. Several people had already experimented along similar lines. In Downey, not far from Fullerton, a man named Paul Bigsby had built several such guitars. But these were custom-made instruments. Their specifications, prices, and availability did not yet meet the requirements of a product that could be manufactured consistently and sold to the general public.

Against this background, Leo became convinced that there was substantial untapped demand and that a commercially viable instrument needed to be developed.

There was, however, one significant weakness in Leo’s position: he did not play the guitar himself.

Fortunately, he succeeded in persuading guitarist George Fullerton, who had been a regular customer at his shop, to join him. Even under difficult circumstances, Leo had found an exceptionally capable assistant, and serious development of the solidbody electric guitar could begin.

George was not only a guitarist but also a talented artist. He was able to handle the subtle work of refining body shapes and other design details with great skill. And because, like Leo, he understood electronics, he was frequently able to assist him in that area as well.

After numerous drawings, experiments, and prototypes, their work finally resulted in the Broadcaster, later renamed the Telecaster.

Equipped with pickups mounted on a solid body, the guitar was radically unconventional. Most striking of all was its maple neck, with no separate fingerboard, simply screwed on to the body—an approach that ignored virtually every traditional assumption about how a guitar ought to be constructed.

Introduced in 1950, this first mass-produced solid body electric guitar quickly made its way into the market despite skepticism from some within the industry. Its momentum was remarkable. Even the long-established Gibson company recognized the threat and accelerated its own entry into the solid body guitar market.

Building on this success, Leo immediately turned to a second project.

This time his goal was to answer the needs of bass players.

At the time, the bass meant the acoustic upright bass: a large instrument that was difficult to transport yet still struggled to produce sufficient volume. It was also delicate and easily damaged. Bass players had long lived with these serious practical problems.

Leo set out to eliminate them all at once by applying the solid body electric concept to the bass.

Development proceeded much as it had with the guitar, and Leo’s ideas gradually took physical form. But unlike the guitar project, this one began in territory where even suitable strings did not yet exist. The difficulties were considerable.

Leo nevertheless overcame each obstacle with characteristic persistence, and in 1951, only a year after the introduction of the Broadcaster/Telecaster, the Precision Bass became a reality.

This first commercially successful solidbody electric bass had another powerful advantage: it was fitted with frets, allowing guitarists to play accurate notes without having to master the technique of the fretless upright bass. Leo’s efforts paid off. Revolutionary yet thoroughly practical, the Precision Bass spread rapidly, just as the Telecaster had before it.

Yet even after one success followed another, Leo never stopped moving forward.

He once remarked that as soon as he finished an invention, he would immediately find something about it that could be improved.

Using the Telecaster as a foundation and incorporating feedback from musicians who played it, Leo began another project aimed at creating what he regarded as a more complete solid body guitar.

It was 1952.

Drawing on a wide range of input, Leo arrived at the concept of a three-pickup guitar equipped with a vibrato system. Three pickups would provide a broader tonal range, while demand for a vibrato unit was growing among musicians as Bigsby’s systems attracted increasing attention.

That same year, 1952, Gibson introduced the Les Paul Model, its prestigious entry into the solidbody market. Suddenly, the solid body guitar scene was becoming much more competitive.

Development of Leo’s new model continued throughout 1952. In addition to the features already described, the body was given a more sculpted, three-dimensional form.

This contoured body improved the way the instrument fitted against the player’s body, while the removal of material simultaneously reduced its weight. Here we can clearly see one of Leo’s characteristic design principles: solving several problems with a single idea. It was Fender design at its best.

For further weight reduction and improved balance, the double-cutaway concept developed for the Precision Bass was incorporated. The headstock design was also refined, and Don Randall gave the new instrument a name that perfectly expressed the idea of technological progress and the future: Stratocaster.

With great expectations on the sales side, the new model was supposed to be released in 1953.

Then came a major miscalculation.

Development appeared to be complete, and the vibrato system had supposedly passed its functional tests. Yet the crucial unit simply did not work satisfactorily.

With the release date approaching, Leo attempted to correct the problems but eventually abandoned the design. He now had to develop an entirely new unit in the shortest possible time.

The task proved extraordinarily difficult, but by the end of 1953 the new system was complete. It would become known as the Synchronized Tremolo.

And Leo did recover from the setback. In redesigning the system, he went further than competing manufacturers by making each saddle fully adjustable. By integrating the major functions of the bridge and vibrato mechanism into a unified design, he also eliminated many of the factors that could contribute to tuning instability.

After overcoming these formidable difficulties, the Stratocaster was finally released in 1954.

Despite a somewhat cautious sales effort following the problems of the previous year, musicians responded enthusiastically. George Fullerton would later recall that the Stratocaster spread through the market like wildfire.

Considering its extraordinary degree of refinement, the Stratocaster may well have been the instrument whose creation caused Leo to be the greatest struggle.

Yet, by the mid-1960s, changes in musical trends and a temporary mismatch between those trends and the character of the instrument caused its popularity to decline, at one point placing its continued production in jeopardy.

Then, in the latter half of the decade, the arrival of the extraordinary guitarist Jimi Hendrix brought the Stratocaster dramatically back into the spotlight. In the years that followed, it became the instrument of choice for such formidable players as Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan, ultimately establishing an unshakable position as one of the eternal standards of the electric guitar.

For a time, Leo’s attention then shifted toward entry-level instruments such as the Duo-Sonic, but in 1957 he began developing a model positioned above the Stratocaster.

He pushed the contoured-body concept even further, introducing a more asymmetrical shape that became known as the offset body. To give the instrument a tonal character completely different from the Stratocaster, it was equipped with pickups using broad, flat coils.

The vibrato was also redesigned as a gentler-acting floating system. Apart from the striking body shape, the instrument had an altogether more restrained and sophisticated character.

The model was named Jazzmaster and released in 1958. Looking at its specifications, the reasoning behind the name becomes readily understandable. To improve durability, the Jazzmaster was also the first Fender guitar designed from the outset with a rosewood fingerboard.

As electric instruments became increasingly widespread, bass players likewise began asking for an upscale instrument offering a different tonal character.

Fender’s answer was Jazz Bass.

In contrast to the Precision Bass, its pickups used narrower, taller coils to produce a clearer, more articulate tone. It was also Fender’s first bass guitar with two pickups, allowing the player to blend them in varying proportions and create subtle tonal variations.

The offset-body concept was again employed. For greater playability, the neck was given a pronounced taper, becoming exceptionally narrow at the lower positions.

The Jazz Bass followed the Jazzmaster as Fender’s next major bass design. The prototype was completed in 1959, then the production model was released in 1960.

As Leo continued to introduce new instruments and those instruments spread throughout the music world, something remarkable began to happen: the instruments themselves started influencing the music being created.

One of the clearest examples was the surf music boom of the early 1960s.

Groups associated with the movement—including the Beach Boys—were surrounded by Fender instruments: Stratocasters, Jazzmaster, the Jaguar that followed them, Fender basses, and Fender amplifiers. The colorful custom finishes and matching headstocks introduced during this period undoubtedly added to the visual excitement and helped accelerate the trend.

The Jaguar, introduced in 1962, shared its basic body shape and vibrato system with the Jazzmaster, while establishing its own identity through different pickups and tone circuitry. Its most decisive difference from the Jazzmaster, however, was its short 22-inch scale.

The Mustang followed in 1964.

Although it retained certain characteristics of an entry-level instrument, including its compact body, there was no compromise in its functional design. It was an exceptionally well-conceived instrument. Particularly notable was its Dynamic Vibrato, an ingenious design combining some of the delicacy of the Floating Tremolo with a more aggressive response.

So far, Leo’s story has been told primarily through his guitars and basses. In reality, amplifier development was proceeding alongside them throughout the same period.

There have been countless amplifier manufacturers in the history of electric music, but few at the time expanded their product lines with the same energy and determination as Fender.

Looking only at the most representative models, Fender amplifier history of the 1950s and 1960s can broadly be divided into two great eras: the tweed line of the 1950s and the Tolex-covered amplifiers of the 1960s.

The tweed period produced such classics as the Bassman, Twin, and Deluxe, particularly from the middle through the latter part of the 1950s.

The Bassman is especially significant. Although originally intended for bass, it came to be highly regarded as a guitar amplifier and ultimately became an enormously influential design, inspiring countless followers and establishing itself as another timeless standard.

The Tolex era produced classics including the Twin Reverb, Super Reverb, and Deluxe Reverb. Among them, the Twin Reverb, like the Bassman before it, became an enduring standard whose reputation has survived for generations.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Leo continued his extraordinary pace of work, sometimes said to have reached sixteen hours a day.

Eventually, however, the strain began to take its toll. His health started to deteriorate toward the end of the 1950s, and by the 1960s the situation had become increasingly serious.

At the same time, the musical-instrument industry was flourishing. Fender and its competitors were pushing one another forward, while popular music itself was entering a period of tremendous growth.

Corporate diversification was also becoming a major business trend, and one successful musical-instrument brand after another was being acquired by larger corporations.

Against this background, Leo recognized that his physical strength could no longer withstand the pressures of managing a rapidly expanding business. He finally decided to retire, and in January 1965 control of Fender passed to CBS.

Yet by the time his five-year consulting agreement with CBS had come to an end, Leo’s health had recovered.

Once free of the agreement, he returned to product development through CLF Research, working again with people from his Fender years, including Forrest White. This activity would eventually become closely connected with Music Man.

During this period Leo contributed to instruments that included the enduringly popular StingRay Bass, and he also worked on distinctive hybrid amplifier designs. Once again, his inventive efforts extended beyond the instruments themselves to pickups, vibrato systems, bridges, and other components.

As development continued, however, Leo eventually withdrew from Music Man amid difficulties in the company’s management.

In 1980 he established G&L, once again working with his former right-hand man, George Fullerton.

There Leo devoted the final years of his life to research and development until his death in 1991. Instruments created during this period—including the ASAT guitars and L-2000 basses—have earned their own places in history,  just as so many of Leo’s earlier creations had done.

Looking back over the path Leo Fender has taken, one thing becomes unmistakably clear.

His life was a continuous process of making roads where no roads had existed before.

How many musicians were able to achieve what they did because of the paths he opened? How many guitar builders were able to take their own work further because Leo had first ventured into unexplored territory?

And those roads have not ended.

Countless players, builders, and designers will continue to travel them into the future, each finding new possibilities along the way.

Leo Fender devoted his life to creating better instruments for musicians and for music itself.

For that reason, the name Leo Fender will continue to be remembered for as long as electric music is played.
